Feelings and Truth
“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” — John 14:6
The culture around us has shattered the boundaries of truth leading us into a world of “anything goes.” We are being encouraged to follow a mindset of our feelings being the deciding factor on truth. The obvious hole in this logic is that feelings vary from person to person, from day to day, and from circumstance to circumstance. If we are told to follow our feelings to lead us to truth, and our feelings always change or differ, does that mean truth always changes? From this mindset it would seem so, but from God’s mindset truth has already been established before the foundation of the world and will remain unchanging for all eternity.
Jesus is God and has established Himself as the way, truth, and life. To know Jesus is to know truth.
Truly knowing someone leaves no room for assumption. We are often tempted to assume others categorize themselves into our belief systems and live in our preferences, but our assumptions do not establish truth. Instead of making foolish assumptions on who Jesus is and what He has established as truth, let’s actually know Jesus and know His truth. He has given us access to absolute truth in His word; in the Bible.
Let’s learn it together.
We must be a people who submit our beliefs and understanding of truth to God’s word.
I am naturally a very emotionally driven person. I have high highs and low lows but the grace and wisdom of Jesus has taught me how to lead my personality instead of allowing my personality to lead me. Emotions and feelings are an incredible gift from God that make us like God! When we learn to submit how we feel to the Bible, we are able to use our feelings to invigorate our lives and the lives of others with a passion for following God and encouraging others.
When we allow our feelings to go untamed, we risk being led away from God by our own sinful natures.
I encourage you to submit your entire life to God’s word, train yourself to feel deeply passionate for the things of God, and to know the mind of Christ.
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” –Jeremiah 17:9
